Effective from June 10th 2025, the licencing rules around large electric vehicles have changed. Anyone with a standard class B driving license can only drive up to 3.5t diesel or petrol powered vehicles, the new rules mean that the weight limit has increased to 4.25t for electric or hydrogen powered vehicles.
This change is designed to accommodate the heavier batteries and powertrains of electric vehicles whilst keeping the payload similar.
The towing capacity rules remain the same, meaning the gross train mass is the same across all powertrains.
